Phobias affect careers!
A phobia can have a huge impact on a person’s career, and on a business.
The main symptom is a desire to avoid what is feared.
Many more people suffer from phobias than we recognize. The reason we rarely know if someone is phobic is because many phobia sufferers find ways to avoid the situations of which they are phobic. They just adjust their lives around their phobia … so they don’t fly for example, or avoid lifts, or any situation where they may need to speak in public.
A phobia is irrational
A phobia is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people.
The person suffering from a phobia knows that their phobia is irrational. They knows it is illogical. They are often embarrassed by it, or feel so overwhelmed in their reaction, that they don’t believe it can be fixed.
Yet phobia’s don’t tend to resolve themselves without some sort of intervention.
Phobias can have a dramatic impact on the quality of our lives – for example, if you have a fear of needles, then that can really impact your health; a fear of dentists has a huge implication on your long term health if you are avoiding going to the dentist; a fear of flying can impact on your career as you are likely to limit the type of jobs you apply for, avoiding the bigger roles which require travel and conferences.
Many of my clients have come to me because after years of ‘making do’, they suddenly realize that its impact on their life and career has been huge.
I have worked with people whose fear of lifts was so intense that they avoided pursuing careers which were exposed to lift travel, or avoided dealing with clients who they had to visit in high rise buildings.
I have worked with people who have had a profound fear of flying. They literally did anything to put themselves out of reach of responsibilities that demanded travel. By the time some of these people came to see me the toll on their careers’ was huge.
There are 3 different classes of phobia:
- Social phobia ie fear of public speaking, going to new places, meeting new people, new social situations. This class of phobia can dramatically affect the quality of a person’s life and even the career they pursue
- Agoraphobia (which is a fear of being outside)
- Specific phobias. This is where people are afraid of particular items or situations
I often work with people who have some sort of social phobia, or specific phobias as these can generally be resolved in one to two 60 minute sessions.

How many sessions will you need?
In most instances it only takes is one session to achieve results. There have been a few instances where two sessions where needed.
“My fear of lifts was for a minimum of 20 years. I was hoping it was going to work – it was annoying because everytime I went into a building I had to use the stairs. In one session it was over. After that I had to go to Sydney for 4 days and in the hotel there was this 3 man lift (my worse nightmare) and I deliberately went up and down as many times as I could for 3 days to prove to myself that it [the session] was successful.” Tony Meduri
“I had suffered with anxiety attacks when in dark places for years. When going to sleep I had to leave on the bedside lamp otherwise I would feel claustrophobic and couldn’t breathe. I had counselling sessions but it didn’t help. After having one treatment with Irene I am now confident in the dark. Irene also discovered why this had been happening to me and helped me undertand the reasons why as well as give me a cure. Truly amazing!” Sarah Horner.
“If you would like to transform something about yourself in 60mins I would strongly recommend speaking to Irene at Dragonfly Transformations – the woman is a magican. I used to have a dreadful fear of flying mixed with some associated claustrophobia & agoraphobia but I feel absolutely better about it now since seeing Irene. Honestly. Amazing.” Daniella Laurenzi
